Sea-Kayaking

Season: May - October

Our multi-day tours takes place in what we consider to be Norway’s most beautiful archipelago, the Færder National Park, less than two hours drive south of Oslo. An unknown treasure for most foreign visitors. Paddle among hundreds of small islands during daytime and enjoy the atmosphere around the campfire at night. We also arrange day-tours close to Oslo and certified sea-kayaking training courses.

Safety has the highest priority on our kayak tours. All our sea-kayak guides are certified instructors approved by the Norwegian Paddling Association (NPF) or British Canoe Union (BCU), capable of handling wind and waves up to 3 stars conditions as a minimum. Our tours are normally conducted in 1 - 2 stars conditions.

In order to join one of our multi-day tours you need to be familiar with basic skills of sea-kayaking and be able to paddle a sea-kayak in calm conditions, that is flat water without any noticeable wind or waves (1 star conditions).

If you are not familiar with sea-kayaking from before you can enlist to one of our training courses before the tour starts. Please find more information about our sea-kayak courses in one of the sections below.

Sea-kayaking in Færder National Park

The Færder National Park covers 340 sq.km. and is a large part of the archipelago of Vestfold, which consists of more than 500 islands. It is located in the southern Oslofjord, where the fjord meets the open sea. Transport time from Oslo to where we start paddling is 90 - 120 minutes.

Our guided sea-kayak tours range up to 5 days/4 nights, with a minimum of 2 days/1 night. Accommodation in expedition style tents.

After your booking you will receive a detailed itinerary and a recommended packing list.

What we do

We will meet you at your hotel or another agreed pick-up point in Oslo at 09.00h. in the morning on the day of departure, followed by less than two hours drive to where the paddling will start.

After packing the kayaks with everything we need for the duration of the tour you will get the first brief, where the guide(s) will explain the route, expected weather-, wind- and wave-conditions and any other issue of relevance for the safety of the group.

Then we slowly start paddling out among the islands. The exact route we choose within the national park will depend on the weather and sea conditions and will be decided a few days before departure.

We stop for lunch during the day and will eventually establish a camp on one of the islands. Together we prepare a delicious meal and enjoy the evening around the fire in the outdoors.

We sleep in tents, with maximum two persons per tent. If you are a solo traveller you are guaranteed to share tent with someone of the same sex. Single tent on request.

After breakfast the next morning we pack down the camp and continue our voyage among the islands.

Sea-kayaking in Færder National Park will provide you with magic moments at sea and will suit both beginners and experienced paddlers.

Day-tours in the Oslofjord

Day-tours by sea-kayak in the inner Oslofjord. Easy and comfortable paddling among islands outside Sandvika, about 15 minutes drive west of Oslo. Transport and lunch included.

What we do

We will meet you at your hotel or another agreed pick-up point at 09.00h. for a short drive in our van to Sandvika.

Your guide will then give you a safety brief and explain the route of the day. Then we paddle out in narrow straits among populated islands with some pretty impressive estates along the shore until we reach the outer islands where there are few or no houses.

From here we can see the centre of Oslo in one direction and the whole basin of the inner Oslofjord in the other.

On the rocky beach of a beautiful island we will have lunch, and perhaps a swim in the fjord for those who would like that. After lunch we paddle a different route back to the point where we started.

Then transport back to the centre of Oslo. We are back in Oslo before16.00h.

A great way to get to know the Oslofjord and its islands if you only have one day available for kayaking.

What you get

  • Transport from Oslo and back again in a comfortable van.

  • All necessary paddling equipment (sea-kayak, paddle, west, spray).

  • Hot lunch prepared on one of the islands.

  • A skilled and certified sea-kayak guide and instructor with local knowledge.

  • The possibility to combine the tour with a formal sea-kayak introduction course and receive a formal certification (NPF “Wetcard”).

  • A great day at sea. Away from the crowds but close to the capital.

Price: 1800 NOK/person

Sea-kayak Training Courses

Oslo Outdoor offers basic sea-kayak training courses for anyone who would like to learn sea-kayaking or improve their skills and get a formal certification. All our courses will enable clients without prior experience in sea-kayaking to participate in our multi-day tours.

Most Norwegian kayak-rental operators require that you have a “wetcard” certification before you can hire a sea-kayak. The wetcard proves that you have a formal sea-kayak education based on the curricula outlined by the Norwegian Paddling Association (NPF), which is roughly similar to the curricula of the British Canoe Union (BCU).

By taking one or more of our courses you will receive a wetcard and can rent a sea-kayak anywhere in Norway.

The NPF wetcard-ladder has six steps. For now we offer courses in the first two steps of the wetcard-ladder.

  1. Introduction course: 3-hours basic introduction to sea-kayaking where you learn how to use the kayak, the paddle, the spray and the west, pluss how to carry the kayak, how to embark and disembark as well as basic paddle strokes, etc.

We normally do this course close to Oslo, but it can also be done in Færder National Park as preparation for a multi-day tour.

  2. Basic course: 16 hours (2 days) where you learn various techniques in order to efficiently maneuver the kayak, as well as rescue techniques if you or someone else fall out of the kayak, safety routines and procedures. The course is based on practical exercises.

We normally do this course as a 2-days tour in the Færder National Park but it can also be done closer to Oslo. When conducted in the National park accommodation will be in tents on one of the islands.

Price:

3-hours Introduction course: 800 NOK/person

16-hours (2-days) Basic course: 3000 NOK/person.

We provide all necessary paddling equipment. A list of what you should wear and bring will be sent you after you have booked the course.

For an additional 900 NOK/person we also provide transport to Færder National Park, food and tent for accommodation, including inflatable sleeping mats.
